Introduction
to Eternal Life |
As each year goes by, much of the world
now celebrates "Easter".
Most of our calendars
this year carried the date of Sunday, April 4, 2010,
with a small caption beneath reading
"Easter". Many Christians have
departed from
calling it this to calling this time of
remembrance,
"Resurrection Day",
as
a glorious commemoration of our Lord Jesus Christ
being raised from the dead.
What a pronouncement of truth of the matter!
Resurrection had
nothing to do with an Easter egg roll but a lot to do with a
Stone roll!
The stone that had sealed the tomb of Jesus had been rolled away
by the angels
of God! This Resurrection is undoubtedly the Prima Facia
Evidence
of the Truth of the Gospel, the truth of the Word, our assurance of
victory over death, hell and the grave and our possession of Everlasting
Eternal Life both here on Earth and in the Heavenly World to come.
Having read the Scriptures
concerning the Day of Resurrection for
many years,
I have come to realize that there is so much more Truth presented
on that
Special Day to the benefit of all who are saved through the Gospel.
There may be those among you who desperately seek
forgiveness for your
sin. There may be those who have been
convicted by the Holy Spirit that
they are truly a depraved person, guilty of sin
and trespasses, in need of
Salvation. There may be those of you who only know
Jesus as a historical
person by academic assent or knowledge.
Irregardless of what ever your
condition or position may be, the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ is
the
answer! These Scriptures teach
us that God wants us to know the real and
true Person
of Jesus, the Son of God! Would you
follow me as I lead you
to persons who at
first knew about Jesus and
then came to know Him
as a Person?
THEY WERE INTRODUCED TO ETERNAL
LIFE in an
instant of time to the
Person of Jesus Christ that they would never forget,
AND, He would
never forget them!
Before I begin these Introductions,
be reminded that the first
Resurrection
Day is the certain Third Day of the Everlasting Covenant, that
is to say,
The New Testament! Why? Because it is the Third Day after the
death of
Jesus on the Cross!
This Good
News is in full conformity with the Word, Who is Our Lord Jesus
Christ!
we are taught by the Scriptures in
Hebrews 9:16-17: "For where
there is a
testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the
testator. 17 For a
testament is in force after men are dead, since it has
no power at all
while the testator lives."
So do you think that you know
Jesus... or, do just know about HIM?
One of the most amazing stories of knowing
the Lord Jesus comes to us
by way Luke 24:13-35. It was now three days after Jesus died on the
Cross that Cleopas and another disciple decided to walk to Emmaus
about seven miles away or about a three
and a half hour walk. They were
greatly discouraged,
disappointed and saddened to know that Jesus had
died on the Cross. Here it was that they had known Him for more that
three years, thinking that Jesus was to be the Hope of Redemption
(Messiah). In their minds, it was all over!
As
they were on their way to Emmaus they continued in long discussions
about what had
happened. Then Jesus appeared and went with them. They
could not see Jesus
because their eyes had been restrained. BUT, still they
could hear His voice!
They did not know that it was Jesus! Jesus continued
to talk with them the
rest of the way and upbraided them for their unbelief.
One of them made a
revealing statement about their lack of faith and belief:
Luke 24:20-21 "But we were hoping
that it was He who was going to
redeem Israel."
Notice that they were "hoping", which is always future
tense, rather than
believing by faith
that it was done, present tense! Further, their statement,
"was going to redeem
Israel" reveals that in their minds this was some event
of the future.
This is contrary to the Biblical teaching: Gal 3:13
"Christ hath
redeemed us from the curse of the law,
being made a curse for us: for it is
written, Cursed
is every one that hangeth on a tree:..."KJV This was a
completed event that
was accomplished on the Cross! It is still a completed
fact that may be
acquired through faith (grace) in the finished work of the Cross!
Jesus spent about three hours in attempt to untangle their theology as He
expounded the Truth of
the Scriptures to them, again, as they came into the
village of Emmaus.
Jesus indicated that He would be going further than the
village. So,
they convinced Him to stay with them since the day was well spent
and it was now evening time.... it
was now time for Supper!
Since
these two disciples had asked Jesus to be their guest, I would presume
that Emmaus was their home town and it
was their home. It is also quite possible
that these two were man
and wife. Only one name is given to identify them.
Why would Jesus chose this seemingly
insignificant couple to receive
such a
Brilliant Revelation about Himself and
Who He Is? We know that the
three of
them sat down to a Table
for the Breaking of Bread. AND, then at that moment
when Jesus Broke the Bread,
their eyes were open to who sat with
them!
The early Church sat down
to celebrate the Breaking of Bread or Communion as
we call it sometimes now.
This simple Supper at Emmaus opened up not only the
eyes of the couple but
set a pattern of God that His Table was open to all whether
they were the simple or
the mighty! Most importantly, this Story of the Breaking
of the Bread, or the Lord's Supper,
may be a place of
Introduction for Many to
the One Who had died on the Cross
for them!
